 CINEMATOGRAPHY CONT...

Previous lesson review:

  • Lighting creates emotion - PL - backlighting creates a melancholic atmosphere.
  • Fish Tank - hand held camera represents the families chaotic conflict.
  • Motif of eyes in PL.
  • Canted angle in PL intro, reflecting something is not as it should be.
WORKING TITLE: With close reference to each film sequence, explore how cinematography as a key element of film form creates meanings and generates responses in the spectator.

The Diving Bell and the butterfly: (Shnabel, 2007)

  • POV shot, the suspect becomes more closely related to the character as we see through his eyes.
  • Extreme close up of other characters face, forcing feelings of vulnerability and intimidation.
  • Pull focus and shallow depth of field creating a distorted visual experience for the spectator, we further relate to his tragic experience.
  • The pan camera movement allows the spectator to only see left and right, restricting us from viewing around the area; this creates tension as the spectator feels limited from viewing the people and objects around the scene.
This is England: (Meadows, 2007)

  • Non-diegetic melancholic piano music. Becoming louder as the scene went on.
  • Two shot of Shaun and older man, contrasting characters
  • The ratios and blending of colour used represent the reminiscent look of television in the time of the movie 1980s
  • As Milky and Combo starting talking the camera shot became more close up and eventually into an extreme close up, increasing the tension for the spectator and creating feelings of claustrophobia.
  • The long shots create feelings of discomfort for the spectator as we are desperate to move on from the tense situation.

In both films the use of the frame creates heavy discomfort, cinematic space.

Explore how cinematography as a key element of film creates meanings and generates responses in the spectator. (The Diving Bell and the butterfly)

A claustrophobic and intense aesthetic is successfully created through the camera movements, shot types and editing of the opening scene in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. First of all, the scene is filmed through the shot type of a POV throughout the entirety of the scene; the use of this shot type is effective in creating a closer relation to the spectator with the main character as we view the situation through his eyes in his time in "reality". This establishes a sense of discomfort as us as the spectator are revealed very little through this shot type. Furthermore, Schanbel uses an extremely shallow depth of field and a repetitive pull focus; Schnabel could perhaps be including these shot types to mimic the distorted visual view experienced by the character for the spectator, ultimately further relating the spectator with his tragic experience and forcing emotions of sympathy. To emphasise this, extreme close ups of the doctors faces are utilised throughout the whole opening scene, followed with very slow paced editing. This is highly successful in creating a vulnerable and intimidated reaction within the spectator as the character is being looked down upon at a very close proxemic; the slow pace editing simple exaggerates these responses by generating an almost decelerated version of time and space, the spectator feeling "left behind" as time continues, heightening the emotions of isolation.
