WASP ANALYSIS
ELEMENTS OF FILM FORM IN SHORT FILMS:
Wasp
- Arnold, 2003.
- Forward tracking shot.
- Handheld camera.
- Fast pace editing in the fight scene.
- Zoom ins of faces. Close up.
- Montages of the area.
- Extreme long shot, motorway.
- Extreme close up, interchanging edits of their faces.
- Small children in a pub car park, contrast.
“Wasp”, made in 2003 and directed by Arnold, clearly portrays the deprivation and chaos within the lives of a single mum and her family of 4 children. The micro-elements of the short film a successful in creating an emotional response within the spectator; sympathy, protectiveness and anxiety are most certainly key moods that are drawn out from the aesthetic of the film. Firstly, a forward tracking shot is utilized when the family a rushing down the stairs; this shot is effective in reflecting the rapid aggression held within the mother and how it ricochets on her children. This aggression and fast pace editing are enhanced with a hand-held camera, the use of this camera movement contributes to the aesthetic created and creates a distorted visual experience for the spectator. Perhaps the hand-held camera is also symbolic of an unstable family, the shaky movements of the camera are reflective of the lack of security they have, ultimately leading us as the spectator into further assuming their material deprivation, an emotion of sympathy has already been catalysed within us.
In addition, I found that mise-en-scene throughout the short film collaborates with the other film form elements to further enrich the aesthetic desired. For example, when it comes to “everything in the scene”, the girls and the baby are in a pub car park late at night. Of course, the evening time creates a sense of pathetic fallacy but the clear juxtaposition of young girls and a baby not only in a car park, which is a naturally dangerous place for small individuals, but also the car park of a pub, which is a place for adults. Obviously this choice of positioning and staging reflects one of the key themes of the short film being risk caused by deprivation.
WWW- A brilliant knowledge of how the micro elements of film creates a specific watch for the audience equally using how it can be indicative of deeper themes in the film.
ebi: Maybe adding names to clarify the characters?
